Imaging Services at the Berkeley Outpatient Center

UCSF Health and John Muir Health have partnered to offer the most accurate and technologically advanced medical imaging services available to patients. Our goal is to make your imaging appointment as comfortable and convenient as possible.

Our Imaging Options

X-Ray

Our low dose digital X-rays provide quick, clear imagery for most bone and chest views. No appointment is needed, and walk-ins (with orders) are welcome.

DEXA

DEXA scans are painless, noninvasive bone density tests designed to measure the strength, density and size of your bones to determine any bone loss.

Bone density testing can:

  • Detect and confirm osteoporosis
  • Detect low bone density before any fracturing occurs
  • Determine and monitor your rate of bone loss

Ultrasound

Ultrasound, also referred to as sonography, is an imaging method that uses sound waves to create and produce images of specific areas in the body.

Ultrasound testing can:

  • Provide valuable information for diagnosing diseases
  • Help direct treatment for many diseases and conditions

3D Mammography Screening

A breakthrough technology for detecting breast cancer in its earliest stages, digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) – also known as “3D mammography” – is available to all patients and is especially helpful for those with dense breast tissue. Our full-service approach to care includes screening and diagnostic mammograms interpreted by a fellowship-trained breast radiologist, and biopsies as needed, all in one convenient location.

3D mammography can:

  • Help the radiologist see through overlapping tissue to find hidden cancers
  • Take multiple pictures of each breast from several angles
  • Provide clearer images than other diagnostic tools

MRI Services

A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan uses powerful magnets and radio waves to create pictures of the body. The magnetic field in a 3T MRI is twice as strong as the one in a traditional 1.5T MRI. This allows 3T MRIs to produce more detailed images and deliver them faster.

3T MRIs can:

  • Produce faster, more accurate scans
  • Reduce the need to repeat scans while enhancing results
  • Make MRIs more comfortable for larger patients and patients with claustrophobia

CT Services

A computed tomography (CT) or computed axial tomography (CAT) scan uses X-rays to create pictures of cross-sections of the body.

Our SOMATOM CT system:

  • Quickly delivers excellent imaging quality
  • Provides results for oncology and cardiology

PET-CT Services

Positron emission tomography (PET) and computerized tomography (CT) are imaging tools that enable doctors to pinpoint the location of cancer in the body. PET-CT combines the two techniques to more accurately diagnose and locate disease.

PET-CT scans can:

  • Detect very small changes in the body
  • Provide superior image quality and more precise diagnoses
  • Enable faster image collection, which shortens the exam time
