Charting a New Course in Brain Tumor Treatment

At the UCSF Brain Tumor Center, patients benefit from leading clinical expertise, pioneering diagnostic and treatment advances, novel research opportunities and unmatched support throughout the care journey.

How we improve patient outcomes

Predicting a better path

We provide patients with precise diagnoses and personalized treatments, enabled by:

  • UCSF500 Cancer Gene Panel, a molecular diagnostic tool to identify targeted therapies
  • DNA methylation profiling for accurate tumor classification
  • Spatial sampling to generate informative 3D models of brain tumors
  • Neuroimaging techniques to detect brain tumor response to treatment

Mapping the brain

A pivotal UCSF-led study has shown that extensive brain tumor resection can reduce recurrence, and we lead this approach through:

  • Brain mapping to protect critical brain regions while maximizing tumor removal
  • Awake brain mapping, which monitors patient feedback to ensure optimal outcomes

Navigating new research frontiers

UCSF has been the #1 NIH-funded institution in neurology and neurosurgery for more than a decade. We integrate research across patient care through:

  • More than 30 labs working to develop next-generation brain tumor treatments
  • Clinical trials, including using CAR T-cell immunotherapy for glioblastoma, focused ultrasound to deliver treatments across the blood-brain barrier and gene expression to determine if patients need radiotherapy
  • Advanced AI tools for fast, accurate diagnoses and more complete resection

Supporting the care journey

We understand the impact of a brain tumor diagnosis, so we provide:

  • Compassionate, holistic care paired with valuable educational resources
  • Caregiver support through the UCSF Neuro-Oncology Gordon Murray Caregiver Program
  • Survivorship support through the Sheri Sobrato Brain Cancer Survivorship Program
  • Ongoing communication with referring providers to support the care continuum
